Design and building theory
This project called for the construction of an art museum for centuries-old art treasures cast in bronze from a once powerful West African dynasty. The design makes use of both traditional African construction methods and modern, western elements of contemporary architecture. This mixture of the cultures of two continents emphasizes the reconciliation of a country with its former occupying nations, which served as motivation for the design - in the context of the return of the so-called Benin bronzes in 2022.

In the Nigerian language, "sa-e-y-ama" means "to remember". Literally translated, however, it means "to cast a motif in bronze". The Benin bronzes not only embody priceless art treasures, but also the history of the Edo dynasty and that of West Africa.
