Building within existing structure
In this module, we looked at a half-timbered building in
the center of Nördlingen that has existed for centuries.
After several days of surveying with the entire semester,
the first task was to precisely analyze the building's
construction, building physics and use. It was then to be
renovated for residential use in accordance with the
current state of the art.
To this end, the existing building was to be extended
by adding an annex or an extension to the property.
The new building was not defined in terms of its use
and design. This gave the architects the freedom to
express themselves freely in terms of the supporting
structure and design without losing the connection to
the existing building.
